At least four people in the city reportedly met unnatural deaths until the latest update since the morning. Two of them were killed falling from a 12-storey under-construction building in Tikatuli.
Besides, a private university student committed suicide at his home in Jatrabari while a female garment worker died because her scarf got twisted in the engine of a trawler on the Turang River in the city’s outskirts.
The two construction workers, Minhaz, 16, son of Pitarul and Habibur Rahman, 20, son of Abdul Hannan, both hailed from Chanpai under the Nawabganj district, died falling from the eleventh floor of an under-construction building in Tikatuli.
Officer-in-charge of Wari police station, Tapan Chandra Saha said the accident took place around 10am when the victims were working on the top floor.
Both workers were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced Habib dead around 11am while Munhaj succumbed to his injuries around 12pm.
No case was filed until filing the report at about 3pm.
In another incident, police at 11:30pm, recovered the body of Atiqur Rahman, 25, a fourth year student of Computer Science at Stamford University, who was hanging from the ceiling of his house at Jatrabari.
The deceased was son of Late Abdul Ali and Runa Laila, a schoolteacher residing at Araihazar in Narayanganj.
Police said sub-inspector Sobhan recovered his body after being informed by neighbours.
Police suspect he might have killed himself following a love related issue.
His body was transported to Mitford Hospital morgue and a case of unnatural death has been filed, police said.
A Sumi Aktar, 20, a garment worker at a factory owned by Standard group at Gazipur, who along with around 70 of her colleagues, boarded a hired trawler from the Turan River to visit Dhaka Zoo. Sumi’s scarf was twisted in the trawler’s running engine, and she died of asphyxiation.
The on-duty doctors at DMCH declared her dead when she was taken there, Mojammel Haque, Inspector of the DMCH police camp, said.
According to Shafiqul Islam, assistant production manager of the factory, Sumi hailed from the Sirajganj District.
