Urea price cut by Tk4 a kg

Update : 25 Aug 2013, 06:56 PM

The government on Sunday reduced the price of urea to Tk16 per kg from Tk20 with immediate effect.

The decision of the agriculture ministry will increase the urea subsidy to TK6.8bn annually.

Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury disclosed the decision at a press conference at her ministry.

She said the government had taken the decision considering the volume of local production of urea and the price of the fertiliser on international market.

The government has so far reduced the prices of other fertilisers three times in its tenure.

“Farmers of the country want to get fertilisers through hassle-free means and the government has ensured it,” Matia said. The government had increased urea’s price to Tk20 from Tk12 after assuming office considering the same factors.

“The price of urea on international market was hiked to Tk45 per kg when the government took charge. The price was Tk37 during the previous government’s period. The price on international market has now come down to Tk34 per kg,” Matia said adding that the decision to reduce urea price had no relation with the upcoming national election.

Criticising the previous BNP-led government, she said: “They killed 18 farmers who demanded a hassle-free system for receiving fertilisers. We do not want to do anything like that.”

The minister told the reporters that the local gas production has also increased, which would help the government supply gas to fertiliser factories.

Asked whose decision it was to reduce urea price, the government’s or the Awami League’s working committee, Matia said: “Most of the party’s working committee members are elected public representatives and they are in the government. So, the committee may have taken the decision, but it is the government’s decision, too.”

Agriculture Secretary Dr SM Nazmul Islam was also present. l
