Update : 22 Aug 2013, 06:56 PM

Bangladesh had been elected as the chairman country of the Asia Pacific Telecommunication and the ICT Development Forum (ADF) for the next two years unanimously, while Japan was made the vice-chairman on Thursday.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Vice-Chairman Md Giasuddin Ahmed will chair the forum that works for 38 Asia and Pacific developing countries where policy makers, regulators and other relevant officials from the region come together on a common platform for a dialogue on issues of common concern with special attention on the rural areas.

The election was commenced on the third day of an international conference of the forum in Dhaka. Asia Pacific Telecommunication is an inter-governmental organisation that operates in conjunction with the active telecom service providers, manufacturers of equipments, and research and development organisations in the field of the ICT.

The BTRC was the co-organiser of the conference. Representatives from 17 countries had been taking part in different technical sessions of the event at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in the city, while the event was inaugurated by Telecom Minister Sahara Khatun on Tuesday.

“Now, we can lead the developed and developing countries. It is a great honour for Bangladesh,” Giasuddin Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune after the election. Earlier on 2010, Bangladesh was made the council member of International Telecommunication Union.
