Ex-chief justice Kemaluddin dies

Former chief justice Kemaluddin Hossain, 90, died on tuesday at a city hospital.

His daughter-in-law Farmin islam, a teacher of Dhaka university, told the Dhaka Tribune that her father-in-law had passed away at 4.55pm suffering from cancer. Kemaluddin was interred at Banani graveyard last evening after two namaaz-e-janaza (funeral prayers) at the Supreme Court premises and Gulshan Azad Mosque, she said.

In separate statements, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Law Minister Shafique Ahmed gave their condolences to the family members. They said through the death of the former chief justice, the nation had lost a person who fought lifelong for establishing justice in the country.

Judges of Appellate Division and High Court, former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, the Supreme Court Bar Association president and secretary participated in the funeral prayer held at Supreme Court premises.

Jurist Kemaluddin was the chief justice for five years starting from 1977. He also served as the chairman of the Bangladesh Law Commission.
