Bus workers in Kaliganj upazila in Jhenaidah district blocked the Jhenaidah - Jessore highway at Main Bus Stand Point for over an hour on Sunday.
They were protesting an assault on a fellow worker by the driver of a three-wheeler, known as locally as a Mahindra. The blockade continued from 12 noon to 1pm.
Kaliganj police station Sub Inspector Munir Hossain said a Mahindra driver had beaten up a transport worker of Shapla Paribahan near Kalignaj bus stand around 11.30am following an argument.
The blockade was withdrawn around 1pm when the local upazila administration assured the workers of taking legal steps against the driver involved in the crime, said the sub inspector.
Jhenaidah’s local bus services have lost quite a few passengers to the Mahindra, which began plying in the district almost a year ago. The three-wheeler carries 10-12 passengers in short trips.
Bus workers said the vehicles stop haphazardly on the streets to pick up passengers, especially at bus stops, which causes traffic jams.
