At least 30,000 people of Sabrang and Shah Parir Dwip in Teknaf upazila are left marooned in their homes due to heavy rains and tidal surge triggered by a depression over the Bay of Bengal.
The onrush of water swept through 14 villages, submerging homes.
Locals said their villages had been flooded by three-four feet of water on Thursday as tidal water rushed through 3km stretch of coastline at the west side of Shah Parir Dwip where no embankment is in place.
The waves damaged village crops and large trees while at least 300 houses now risk being washed away.
“We do not have any shelter centre in the village for such situations. I saw over 100 families leaving the area,” villager Abdul Karim said.
Teknaf Roads and Highways Department’s Deputy Assistant Engineer Md Abdur Rashid said the tidal surge had broken through the embankment in several areas. “It will not be possible for us to repair anything until the flood situation improves,” he said.
Meanwhile, the local meteorology department office predicted more downpour in the next couple of days due to the low in the Bay.
