Myanmar warship deployed in Naaf

Update : 27 Jul 2013, 02:57 AM

Myanmar navy has deployed a warship on the Naaf river near Teknaf on the country’s borders with Bangladesh.

Myanmar authorities has informed Bangladesh about deployment of the warship, Border Guard Bangladesh Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Jahid Hasan said, reports our correspondent from Cox’s Bazar.

Border Guard Bangladesh official also denied any tension on the border leading to the deployment of the Myanmar navy warship 554, according to bdnews24.com.

Officials said Myanmar has disbanded its border guard force Nasaka and is trying to put in place a new force to replace it.

Myanmar abolished Nasaka on July 16 under pressure by the United States which pulled it up for ‘brutal torture’ on the Rohingyas and Muslims.

The BGB official said the warship was sent for border protection duties for an interim period before a new force is deployed on the border.

He said the ship was now at Mongdu Khal on the Naaf river.
