3 killed, 7 injured in a tempo-truck collision

At least three people were killed and another seven injured after their carrier, a three wheeled human hauler collided with a truck at Bejhar on the Barisal-Dhaka highway around 9:20am on Thursday.

Iqbal Hossain, Gournadi highway police station officer-in-charge, said the human hauler was plying on the Gournadi-Shikarpur route, while the truck was going to Muktagachha from Barisal.

Police and hospital sources said Biren Kirtania, 60, died on the spot, while Abul Kalam Khalifa alias Kalu, 26, and an unidentified girl, 11, died at Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Among the injured, Joyonta Bepari, 31, and Zamal Hossain, 45, were admitted at Gournadi Upazila Health Complex and Babul Rari, 40, Sarwar Hossain, 44, Nuruddin, 35, an unidentified girl, 13, and an unidentified women, 26, were receiving medical attention at Barisal SBMCH in critical condition.

Agitated people blocked the road after the accident, protesting the movement of such vehicles illegally on the highways by managing police and local ruling party leaders.

Police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control. Later, they recovered the bodies and sent the injured to different hospitals, said Abul Kalam, Gournadi police station officer-in-charge.
