The country’s supermarket owners have demanded the withdrawal of the 4% value added tax (VAT) imposed on them.
They made the call during a meeting with Food Minister Abdur Razzaque on Thursday.
Our correspondent reports that leaders of Bangladesh Superstore Owners Association (BSOA) urged the minister to end harassment of superstore owners in the name of the fight against food adulteration.
They also appreciated the government’s move to introduce the Pure Food Act 2013 which cites a maximum of 14 years imprisonment and fines of up to Tk2m for violators.
They said proper implementation of the act could help them end the harassment of the shop owners.
Among others, BSOA President Kazi Inam Ahmed, General Secretary Md Zakir Hossain and Director Kazi Nabil Ahmed were present during the meeting.
