Two groups of officers at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) in Gazipur have recently engaged in a clash.
The incident took place on Monday, when a group of officers allegedly confined some officials from their rival faction, including the director general of BRRI to an office room.
The two groups are led by Dr Shahjahan Kabir, head of Agricultural Statistics Division and Principal Scientific Officer Dr Humayun Kabir.
Meanwhile, following Monday’s incident, workers under the banner of Bangladesh Dhan Gobeshona Sramik Samity brought out a procession Tuesday around 11am at the BRRI premise.
Md Rahim Uddin and Abdul Majid, president and general secretary of the Samity respectively, led the demonstration.
Mohammad Rezaul Manir, scientific officer of Farm Management Division said: “Shahjahan Kabir with his group have been threatening us over our protest against corruption in tender process as well as recruitment procedure of some employees.”
Dr Shahjahan Kabir in this regard said, some junior officers were involved in a clash with workers.
He added, a vested quarter are envious of his success as he is set to be promoted in the future. So, they are spreading rumours to ruin his reputation.
Meanwhile, Dr Mohammed Saidul Islam, Dr Jiban Krishna Biswas,
Dr Shahjahan Kabir and Md Abdul Aziz, assistant director (common service) lodged a general diary with Joydebpur police station on Monday.
SM Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of the police station said, “We are investigating into the matter. No case was filed till Tuesday afternoon.”
