Ex-CJ Khairul appointed law commission chief

Update : 23 Jul 2013, 10:11 AM

Former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque has been appointed as the new chairman of the Law Commission.

The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs issued a notice on Sunday in this regard.

The ex-chief justice will lead the commission for three years, and he will receive remuneration, perks and benefits equivalent to the chief justice of the Supreme Court. Sources said he might join the office on Wednesday.

Khairul will replace Prof M Shah Alam, who had been serving as the commission's chief as its acting chairman after its last chairman Justice MA Rashid, a retired High Court judge, resigned on October 7, 2010.

The tenure of Prof Alam recently expired.

Khairul headed the Appellate Division panel, which scrapped the 13th amendment to the constitution, and by doing so paved the way for the inclusion of the much-talked-about 15th amendment to the Constitution.
