At least six schoolgirls went missing when a boat capsized in the Padma River in Kolchuri, sadar upazila, Pabna, on Monday afternoon.
Police said the boat, carrying 30-32 students from Bhaduriadangi government primary school in the upazila, sank into the river due to gusty winds around 12:30pm while they were travelling to Kolchuri government primary school to withdraw stipend money.
Six girls went missing from the capsized boat, while locals managed to rescue the others.
Those who went missing are: Dulu, a class-IV student and daughter of Tajiruddin; Rahima Khatun, a class-II student and daughter of Abdur Rahman; Moyna Khatun, a class-V student and daughter of Ansar Ali; Champa Khatun, a class-V student and daughter of Abdus Sobhan; Meem, a class-V student and daughter of Jabbar Pramanik; and Sharmin Akhter, a class-IV student and daughter of Abul Kashem.
All of them hailed from Bhaduriadangi village.
UNO Salma Khatun, who rushed to the spot on information, told UNB that divers from the fire brigade had gone to the spot and started a rescue operation.
