Journalist leaders on Monday demanded the arrest of ruling party MP Golam Maula Rony within seven days and his expulsion from parliament for assaulting two journalists from the private television channel, Independent TV, reports UNB.
The demand came from a human chain programme in front of Jatiya Press Club in the capital at about 11am.
Leaders of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) and Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) participated in the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, BFUJ President Ruhul Amin Gazi demanded the arrest of MP Golam Maula Rony and his expulsion from parliament for assaulting journalists.
“We demand [Golam Maula] Rony’s arrest and his expulsion from parliament. If he is not arrested within seven days, we’ll declare a greater movement,’’ he said.
DRU President Shahed Chowdhury declared Golam Maula Rony an enemy of media, saying “we demand a ban on MP Rony from all media ‘talk shows.’”
Arranged by the Independent Group, DUJ General Secretary M Baker Hossain and DRU General Secretary Elias Khan also spoke at the programme.
MP Rony, along with his supporters, assaulted Independent TV reporter Imtiaz Momin Sony and cameraman Mohsin Mukul Bakul when they went to Rony’s office on the 9th floor of ‘Meherba Plaza’ at Topkhana Road in the city on Saturday to verify some allegations against the MP.
On Saturday night, hours after the Independent Television authorities filed a case against Rony, the ruling party MP filed a counter-case against Salman F Rahman– one of the owners of Independent TV – and others on charge of attempting to kill him.
On Sunday, a Dhaka court granted bail on bond to young ruling party MP Golam Maula Rony in an attempt-to-murder case.
