Update : 21 Jul 2013, 02:51 AM

A businessman was released after paying a ransom of Tk100,000 on Friday night after three days of his abduction at Mogholhat border in Lalmonirhat sadar upazila.

The businessman was abducted by Indian criminals, who were assisted by a Bangladeshi, at Mogholhat border on Wednesday afternoon and was taken to Doribas village under Dinhata police station in Coochbehar, West Bengal.

Three flag meetings between the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Border Security Force (BSF) took place between Wednesday and Friday over the issue but the criminal gang did not release the businessman until Friday afternoon, BGB sources said.

BGB and local sources said the gang led by Jahangir Alam from Bangladesh and Babu Islam alias Fore Babu from India jointly abducted the businessman. The plan to abduct was made by a border transport broker named Keshab Chandra.

BGB sources said Sudhir Chandra, 45, son of late Sudhen Chandra of Chaparhat village in Kaliganj upazila of the district, went to Keshab’s residence at Mogholhat with Tk600,000 for entering India illegally on Wednesday morning.

Keshab took the cash from Sudhir and fled from the border, keeping the businessman there.

In the meantime, Sudhir was kidnapped by the Indian criminal gang of Fore Babu. After six hours of the incident, the abductors sent a message to Sudhir’s family demanding a ransom of Tk200,000 for his release.

Mogholhat BGB camp commander Subedar Shah Alam said the flag meetings decided that Keshab and Jahangir Alam along with five others on Bangladesh side, and Fore Babu and his five accomplices in India must be caught.
