Shahzadpur still reels under flood

Update : 20 Jul 2013, 03:18 PM
The flood situation in Shahzadpur upazila of Sirajganj still remains unchanged although water of the Jumuna river has started to recede.    More than 100 houses, 15 primary schools and vast tracts of cropland remain submerged.    Many school playgrounds are now under floodwater hampering studies of the students in the upazila.   According to the upazila relief and rehabilitation office the low-lying areas of the upazila were flooded as the Jamuna river water kept swelling since late last month.   Floodwater entered the classrooms and playgrounds of 15 primary schools in the area.    Besides, the grass fields raised by the farmers have also been inundated, creating fodder crisis for the cattle in the area, resulting in fall in daily milk production.    In addition, erosion by the mighty river continues to wreak havoc in some places of the upazila.   Water Development Board sources said the affected people are shifting their houses to safer places in the face of the ceaseless erosion.
