At least four vegetable traders including three members of one family were killed and five others injured in a road accident on Friday on the Panchdona-Tongi road in Kaliganj upazila, Gazipur.
The deceased were indentified as Redwan Ahmed, 14, his brother Sohrab Hossain, their uncle Zakir Hossain, 35, and Khorshed Alam.
The injured were admitted to Kaliganj Upazila Hospital. One of the injured, Zakir, succumbed to his injury on the way to the hospital. All of the victims hailed from Charsubudi village under Raipura upazila of Narsingdi.
Police and witnesses said a Tongi-bound truck loaded with vegetables from Adiabad area in Raipura upazila fell into a roadside ditch in Bhagdi area under Kaliganj upazila after its driver lost his control of the vehicle.
At that time, another trucker, also losing control of his vehicle, rammed into the damaged vehicle killing the three vegetable traders on the spot.
On information, Kaliganj police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies. The bodies were sent to Gazipur General Hospital for autopsy.
A case was filed with Kaliganj police station in this connection.
In another road accident, a Power Loom Workers Federation leader was crushed under the wheel of a truck on the Narsingdi-Dhaka highway in Narsingdi district’s Chowala area on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Mamun Molla, 35, vice-president of the district unit federation.
Police and witnesses said Mamun was crossing the highway around 10:30pm when a Dhaka-bound speedy truck hit him from behind and ran over him.
Locals rushed to his rescue and sent him to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where attending doctors declared him dead.
A case was filed with Narsingdi Sadar police station. The driver managed to flee with his vehicle.
