Hartal violence took the life of a nine-year-old girl, who was running for a safe place after being afraid of picketing by Jamaat-Shibir activists during Tuesday’s countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal enforced Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Sadia Sultana, daughter of Saidul Islam, was crushed under the wheels of a bus in front of Chandana High School at Gazipur intersection.
She was standing with her mother beside the road on their way home. Suddenly, Jamaat-Shibir activists started picketing and vandalising vehicles on the road. The activists also torched a bus on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, witnesses said.
The activists vandalised around 10-12 vehicles by indiscriminately throwing brickbats that also left a bus driver injured, they said, adding that facing such attack, a bus, parked nearby the burning bus, tried to leave the spot as soon as possible.
Being frightened of the sudden violence, the minor girl started running for a safe place when a bus crushed her leaving her spot dead.
