9-year-old girl killed in Jamaat violence

At least four people, including a nine-year-old girl, were killed in Gazipur, Satkhira and Dinajpur during the countrywide daylong shutdown on Tuesday.

The hartal, called by Jamaat-e-Islami and left-leaning student organisations over the verdict of ex-Jamaat chief Ghulam Azam in a war crime case, was enforced amid stray incidents of explosions and vandalism across the country.

Gazipur

A girl was crushed under the wheels of a bus of near Chandana High School at Gazipur Chawrasta intersection when its driver was trying to save the bus from pickets, our Gazipur correspondent report.

The hartal supporters were trying to set fire to another bus of Pathersathi Paribahan, which was standing next beside to it.

The girl, Nadia Sultana, died on the spot while 10 people including the driver of the bus sustained injuries.

Witnesses said around 12:30pm some pickets rushed to the area and ransacked some vehicles. At one stage, they tried to torch the bus which was standing on the bus stand near the school.

The passengers of the bus managed to get down in a hurry.

In an attempt to save his own bus, the driver of Pathersathi Paribahan, which was standing beside the burning bus, kicked start the engine roughly and crashed into Nadia.

She was waiting with her mother there to go to Netrokona.

Her body was sent to Gazipur Sadar Hospital morgue.

The driver, who was injured badly in the fire, was whisked off to Gazipur Sadar Hospital first and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Elsewhere in Gazipur, Shibir activists torched a bus of Sky Line Paribahan on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway at Chandana intersection at about 10am. Locals later put out the blaze.

Md Jahidul Islam, the officer-in-charge (investigation) of Joydebpur police station confirmed both the incidents.

Satkhira

Two local leaders of Jamaat and its student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir were killed during a clash with police at Paokhali in Kaliganj upazila of the district in the morning, reports UNB.

Some 50 people, including nine policemen, were also injured in the clash.

Dinajpur

A bus driver, Abdul Quddus, 60, was killed in an attack by Jamaat-Shibir workers in Chirabandar upazila of the district.

Locals said pickets attacked Quddus with bricks while he was travelling towards Dinajpur on a van, critically injuring him.

He died at 9pm in Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, a truck driver and his helper were injured in a crash as they lost control when picketers attacked their truck with bricks.

Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Sarwar Morshed Shamim said a case was filed in this connection.

Dhaka

Shibir activists exploded about 12 crude bombs in different parts of the capital during the shutdown.  

At least 4-5 crude bombs went off at Shanir Akhra at 6am and 2-3 at Maniknagar at 8:45am, causing panic among the dwellers of the areas.  

At 6:30am, Shibir activists exploded two hand bombs at Panthapath.  

They blasted two bombs from a procession in Kajlarpar area at 6:15am and police fired two blank shots to disperse them.  

Pickets made a fire on the road by pouring petrol at Pallabi bus stand area at 7:40am. Later police doused the fire.  

Meanwhile, left-leaning student organisations brought out a procession in Paltan area in support of their hartal.
