The Ganajagaran Mancha has rejected the verdict against war criminal Ghulam Azam and vowed to continue protest as long as capital punishment could not be realised against all the suspects and convicts.
The International Crimes Tribunal 1 on Monday handed down 90 years’ jail term to former Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Ghulam Azam on charges of committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Imran H Sarker, convener of the Shahbagh Ganajagaran Mancha, said there was no way that they were going to accept the verdict.
He said: “We have been continuing with our movement for six months. We will keep the protests on for ensuring death penalty of the top Rajakar who committed various crimes during the Liberation War.”
“We are seriously frustrated. The nation wanted the traitor [Ghulam Azam] to be handed down the highest punishment. The people of the country is utterly frustrated with the verdict,” he said.
The Ganajagaran spokesperson also said they would observe a torch procession this evening.
Later, the protesters brought out a procession and started moving towards the High Court till last updates arrived.
