The tax authorities in Gazipur exceeded target of revenue collection by Tk272m during the concluded fiscal year, showed official data.
A total of Tk2.42bn was collected against the target of Tk2.15bn in the fiscal, said the data which added that the largest amount of revenue came from land registrations.
Gazipur tax office has 22 circles and is yet to come under automation system.
Although Gazipur is an industrial zone, revenue collection from the sector is not very significant as, sources said, most of the industrialists have their tax files registered in Dhaka.
“The majority of the industrialists have their tax files in Dhaka,” SM Badiruzzaman, deputy commissioner of taxes, Gazipur tax commissioner’s office, told the Dhaka Tribune.
He said the general taxpayers contributed Tk150m to the amount of revenue collection during the fiscal.
In reply to a query about tax collection strategy for the new fiscal year, SM Badiruzzaman said: “We have not set any target formally yet for the current fiscal year’s target. But the NBR’s higher authorities have verbally asked us to collect Tk2.8bn in FY14.”
Officials at Gazipur tax office think that they will be able to collect that amount of revenue in the fiscal as efforts in this regard have already been stepped up.
Badiruzzaman said: “We have four inspectors to collect revenue in 22 circle offices under the zone. Taxes are imposed on individuals considering their payment capacity. So, people are cooperative to our inspectors paying taxes regularly.”
Responding to a question whether Gazipur office has any plan to launch automation system in tax collection, he said: “We still lack modern equipment necessary to introduce automation system in our local office. But efforts are underway to equip our all circles to bring them under automation system.”
The tax deputy commissioner, however, said all of 22 circles are connected with internet facility and activities are done through online.
“But we could not introduce online TIN registration system yet. However, password delivery from the NBR head office to this end has begun,” said Badiruzzaman.
According to him, if E-TIN was launched in Gazipur, hassles to taxpayers would ease and tax collection would also go up.
