Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the MC College dormitory in Sylhet was being rebuilt to be brought back in its previous form, however, the wood that was used in its primary construction is no longer availible.
Nazrul Hakim, assistant engineer of Education Engineering Department (EED), Sylhet said: “We are exporting wood to go in line with the heritage of the college and demands of the Sylheti people. We are following the design of ‘Srikanta Hostel’ to reconstruct the three blocks.’’
On July 8 last year, 200 rooms of MC College student dormitory were gutted as the agitated leaders and activists of Chhatra League set them on fire during clashes with Islami Chhatra Shibir. The incident received criticism both at home and abroad.
Being a former student of the college, Nurul Islam Nahid expressed deep shock and sorrow over the incident.
According to sources, around Tk40m will be spent for the total reconstruction work which started on December 5 last year after being inaugurated by Nurul Islam Nahid and Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
Three committees are in charge of the construction work under the surveillance of the EED. An internal team of the college led by Professor Habibur Rahman Akhand of mathematics department is supervising the reconstruction work as well, Principal of MC College Dhiresh Chandra Sarker informed the Dhaka Tribune.
Hakim said 50% of the work for block 1 and block 2 has already been completed along with 75% of the work for block 4. Each block would accommodate 56 students. The project work is expected to end by September this year.
Chief Engineer of Education Directorate Abdullah Hil Azad visited the project area twice.
