Nine personalities and institutions were honoured with this year’s Nawab Ali Chowdhury National Award for their contribution to the society.
The awards ceremony of Nawab Ali Chowdhury National Award 2013 was held at Dhaka University Friday, marking the 84th death anniversary of eminent politician and social worker Nawab Bahadur Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury.
Nawab Bahadur Syed Nawab Ali-Hasan Ali Foundation (NAHAF) and Policy Research Centre (PRC) organised the event at the DU Senate Bhaban, reports UNB.
The recipients of the award are: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (Women Empowerment), Planning Minister AK Khandker (Freedom Fighter), Brac Chairperson Fazle Hasan Abed (Poverty Alleviation), University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof AK Azad Chowdhury (Education), Bangladesh Krishi Bank Chairman Khandoker Ibrahim Khaled (Banking), Prof M Kaykobad of Bangladesh University of Science and Technology (ICT), journalist MJ AKbar (Media and Journalism), Bangladesh Tourism Corporation (BTC) (Tourism) and Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan (Sports).
Presided over by NAHAF chairman Prof Akbaruddin Ahmad, the programme was addressed, among others, by Planning Minister AK Khandker and Dhaka University Vice chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique.
Speakers on the occasion remembered Nawab Ali’s contribution to various fields, particularly his lifelong efforts for the advancement of education in Bengal.
During his long political career, Nawab Ali was elected several times in various legislative bodies, including the Bengal and Assam Legislative Council and Bengal Legislative Council, and also served as a Minister of the Governors Executive Council in Bengal.
Nawab Ali piloted the Dhaka University Bill in the then Imperial Legislative Assembly and played a major role as a member of the Dhaka University Committee formed in 1912.
Nawab Ali was born in 1863 and died on April 17 in 1929.
