‘Killers’ moving freely on JU campus

Update : 05 Jul 2013, 07:41 AM

Several students of Jahangirnagar University Chhatra League who were expelled and are accused for the murder of Zubair Ahmed, have been roaming around and staying at different dormitories on the campus.

The friends of Zubair have expressed their concerns in this regard. They alleged that the authorities remained silent for unknown reasons.

However, the authorities claim the accused came to the campus only to take part in examinations following High Court orders. Zubair, a student of the English department, was stabbed and beaten indiscriminately on campus on January 8 of last year by the activists of a faction of Chhatra League.

Despite having the blessings of former vice-chancellor Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir, seven Chhatra League activists were expelled from the university, and six were suspended for two years following a probe.

The expelled students are: Khandaker Ashikul Islam, Khan Md Rois and Md Zahid Hasan of zoology department; Md Rashedul Islam Razu and Ishtiak Mehbub Arup of philosophy; Mahbub Akram of government and politics; and Nazmus Sakib Tanu of biochemistry and molecular biology department.

The six others are Md Mazharul Islam and Md Mahmudul Hasan Masud of history department; Md Kamruzzaman Shohag of philosophy; Shafiul Alam Shetu and Abhinandan Kundu of statistics; and Md Nazmul Hussain Plabon of the public administration department.

However, many of them were seen on campus. Ashikul, Zahid, Shetu and Abhinandan were seen to stay at room 317/A of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, on multiple occasions; Plabon at room 341 of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall; while Shohag and Mazharul were seen frequently.

On condition of anonymity, a resident of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, and also a friend of Zubair, told the Dhaka Tribune: “This is very shameful for us as friends of Zubair, since the killers are staying with us in the same dorm. “It seems that our authorities are not willing to punish the culprits as they are ruling party activists,” he added.

Contacted, VC Prof Anwar Hossain denied the allegations, and told the Dhaka Tribune that some students brought stay orders from the High Court, to continue their examinations, but none of them were allowed to stay in the dorms.

“Stern actions will be taken if any of them stay at any dormitory,” he said.
