Topmost police officials have warned the lawmen to keep refrain from involving any crimes, including extortion on the highways, and expressed concern over the extortion of vested sector, robberies on the highways and wide sprayed marketing of fake notes.
A closed door meeting held at Police Headquarters Tuesday also decided to impose a three tire security measures with the deployment of additional forces and intensified vigilance so that the people of the country celebrate the biggest religious festival and move smoothly.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker presided over the meeting in participation with the top officials ranking from Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) to above, including the chiefs of almost all the units of the police like the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Special Branch (SB), Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), Metropolitan Police and Ranges.
Sources said the meeting in its discussion focused the extortion and robberies centering the Eid, involvement of law enforcers in the crimes, extortion and robberies on the highways, black-marketing, mugging, widespread marketing and usages of fake notes, activities of the gangs used to loot people by doping and also applications of other ways of cheating peopl.
A senior police official ranked to an Additional IGP said told Dhaka Tribune that a warning message has been forwarded to the field level policemen his warning messages through the chiefs of all the units.
“At the meeting, the IGP and also mentioned several incidents of extortions and crimes involving policemen in the past, mainly in last year, as the references”, said another officer.
According to sources, to reduce traffic jams on the highway during the Eid as well as to curb harassment to vehicle owners and drivers by police, the IGP also directed not to search vehicles on the highways without any specific allegation.
The meeting also discussed a number of incidents took place recently involving police in the crimes tarnishing the images of the law enforcement agency, the sources added.
The meeting also decided to impose a multi-phased three-tire security measures centring the Eid festival so that people could make their journey smooth and comfortable on way homes and in their returns.
