Update : 02 Jul 2013, 07:05 AM

A Buet student who was hacked by assailants in his dormitory room on April 9 died in the capital’s Square Hospital early Tuesday.

Victim Arif Rayhan Dwip, 21, was a third year student of mechanical engineering and a member of the convener’s committee of the Buet unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

On April 16, police arrested Mejbah Uddin, 24, a fourth-year student of Buet’s Civil Engineering Department, in connection to this.

According to witnesses, four youths hacked Dwip in his room, located in the Kobi Nazrul Islam Hall, using sharp weapons at around 11am on April 9.

Although the assailants could not be recognised, Arif’s friends said they suspect members of Islami Chhatra Shibir or Hefazat-e-Islam of being responsible.

There were two deep injuries in his head, and his left eye was almost gouged out.

Meanwhile, activists of Ganajagaran Mancha brought out a procession from the city’s Shahbag intersection demanding due punishment for the killers of Dwip.

Imran H Sarkar, Convener of the Ganajagaran Mancha, led the procession.

The protesters from the programme accused Hefazat-e-Islam of making the attack on Dwip that took his life.
