Update : 01 Jul 2013, 12:19 PM

A fire service employee, who was injured in a wall collapse during rescue work at a footwear factory at Chittagong Export Processing Zone (EPZ) Sunday evening, died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Abu Sayed, 40, a fire fighter at the Agrabad Fire Station, hailing from the Shibpur area of Narsingdi.

Ruhul Amin, deputy director of fire service and civil defence in Chittagong, said three fire fighters, including Sayed, sustained injuries at about 8pm on Sunday when a wall of the building collapsed on them.

“The injured were rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital where Sayed succumbed to his injuries at about 8am on Monday,” he added.

A devastating fire broke out at the shoe factory in CEPZ at about 3:20am on Sunday when the fire fighters had to struggle for more than five hours to douse it, as there was a large stockpile of chemicals in the factory.

Factory authorities claimed worth of the damaged properties to being more than Tk2bn. However, the fire service and civil defence sources were yet to estimate the losses.
