At least twenty roadside trees have been cut down, allegedly by men from the ruling party Awami League (AL), in six of the villages in Lalmonirhat on Friday. The AL men assaulted four bystanders for protesting the illicit act, said the villagers.
Eight mahoganies planted beside the Hatibandha- Tongbhanga road, two large rain trees near the Patgram- Jagotber village of Patgram upazila, three large mahoganies from Mohishkhocha- Vadai road at Mohishkhocha village, two trees from Hatibandha- Doikhowa road at Tongbhanga village, and a rain tree from Aditmari- Kamlabari road in the village of Kamlabari of Aditmari upazila have been cut down illegally, according to the villagers.
District council official sources said that cutting down those trees were illegal as they had not been put up for auction by concerned authorities. The administrator of the district council would take the necessary steps regarding the matter.
