Gazipur people pin hope on future mayor

Update : 28 Jun 2013, 02:58 PM

Gazipur city dwellers hope that the future mayor of the newly formed city corporation would provide the city with basic amenities.

The city corporation had been long reeling under multifarious problems – waterlogging, bad drainage system, mismanagement of waste and lack of good communications system and utility services, said Mostafa Kamal, a city resident.

Mujibur Rahman, a resident of Chandona, told the Dhaka Tribune waterlogging is the main problem of the city. Both sides of Tongi-Chourasta highway and different parts of the area go under water after a light shower.

When it rains, the roads are inundated for 2-3 days, he added.

Another city inhabitant Al-Amin echoed the same.

He termed the waste management system of the city to be very poor which also contributes to pollution.

Parts of the highways and roads across the city corporation have also been dilapidated while waste is dumped on both sides of the highways polluting the adjacent areas and industrial waste add to the crisis.

Moreover, road crossing poses risk to people in the city corporation since highways have crisscrossed the city corporation. “It is high time that aspiring mayor of Gazipur City Corporation included the flyover construction in the city in the mayoral election manifesto, besides ensuring basic amenities for us,” said Gazipur residents.

Due to lack of overpass, underpass and flyover, pedestrians cross highways jumping over road dividers. At the time of closing garments and other factories, traffic jam is at its worst.

At different times, the government and elected leaders assured the city people that necessary steps would be taken to improve the city condition, but none has been taken so far.

Now, the city dwellers are eagerly looking forward to their future mayor who will be at the helm for city development. l
