Two assistant sub-inspectors of the police suffered mass beatings in Madaripur after provoking public fury by trying to arrest the family members of a complainant in a dowry case, instead of the accused.
The incident occurred near the Bailey bridge area in Matborerchar union under the Shibchar upazila of Madaripur.
The duo was identified as AK Azad and Neuton Datta, both serving for the Shibchar police station.
Locals said that Shawkat Sheikh, a local of the area, filed a case with the police station on Tuesday night, accusing his brother-in-law Omar Ali of persecuting his sister for dowry.
But instead of arresting the accused, ASIs Azad and Neuton tried to arrest the complainant, his sister Beauty, their aged mother, and three other family members – apparently in an effort to save the accused.
As the news spread, it ignited fury among the locality and people instantly turned up at Shawkat’s house. They confined the policemen and proceeded to beat them.
Later, Uttom Kumar, a sub-inspector of the police station, visited the spot and was able to bring the situation under control.
