BTRC to swoop on unauthorised cybercafe

Update : 21 Jun 2013, 05:06 AM

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission is going to take legal action against the unauthorised cybercafe across the country.

The BTRC has asked all national and regional internet service providers (ISPs) not to provide bandwidth to any unauthorised cybercafe, says a BSS report.

“Legal action will be taken if ISPs provide bandwidth to unauthorised cybercafe,” said a regulator directive.

Akhtaruzzaman Manju, president of the ISPs Association of Bangladesh, has welcomed the initiative.

There are 180 authorised cybercafe in the country now; the number of unauthorised ones is over 3,000, according to the Cybercafe Owners’ Association.

The BTRC said the cybercafe are doing business without taking licence although its fee is very nominal – Tk500 to Tk5,000 for several categories.

It advised the cybercafe owners to communicate with the commission if they faced any difficulty in getting the licence.
