A Bangladeshi youth was gravely injured as the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire on him yesterday near the Burimari border of the district’s Patgram upazila.
The victim was identified as Liton Islam Shamim, 22, of Mughlibari village near the upazila’s Burimari border.
The wounded Bangladeshi was taken to Patgram Upazila Health Complex and then referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) sources said that patrolling BSF men of Changrabandha camp, in the district of Cooch Behar in West Bengal, opened fire on Bangladeshi cattle traders when around five or six of them were returning from India bringing in 20-25 Indian cattle with them.
The BSF opened fire near the main pillar No. 840 at Burimari border.
Shamim was shot in his leg and back while he was taking to his heels to cross into Bangladesh. Locals rescued him and took him to a local hospital at dawn.
15th BGB battalion commander at Burimari, Subedar Khademul Islam, said that BGB had sent a letter to BSF protesting the incident at around 10:30am yesterday.
Commanding Officer of the battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Mahbubur Rahman, confirmed the incident.
He said that he had contacted the BSF yesterday morning to confirm a flag meeting, but has yet to get any response.
