Update : 20 Jun 2013, 03:05 PM

A member of Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghity Samity (PCJSS) was allegedly abducted by rival group United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) from Jorabirij area under Dighinala upazila in Khagrachhari, yesterday morning.

“A group of 10-12 armed men abducted Borogama Chakma, 32, son of Shanti Bikash Chakma, from Jorabirij area at around 10am and took him into nearby woods,” Officer-in-charge of Dighinala police station Shahdat Hossain Titu said, quoting locals.

“He might have been abducted by the UPDF,” the OC Shahdat said, adding that police are trying to rescue him.

Central PCJSS assistant press secretary, Sajib Chakma, blamed rival UPDF for the abduction and urged administration to rescue him.

However, Coordinator of Dighinala upazila unit UPDF Kishor

Chakma denied their involvement with the abduction.

Meanwhile, Guimara Thana Awami League President, Jahangir Alam, who was abducted on June 16, has yet to be rescued from or freed by his captors.

“We are trying to rescue my father through negotiations,” said Mohammad Hanif, eldest son of the abductee, told the Dhaka Tribune.

He declined to make any comments on the exact amount of money they had sent to the abductors through local negotiators.

But several intelligence branches confirmed that the abductors had agreed to free Jahangir for an exchange of Tk1m.
