5 policemen to lose job for custodial death

Five policemen are going to lose job for their suspected involvement in abduction and torture to death of a businessman of Savar, Shamim Sarker, under their custody on June 6 last.

“Five policemen will be sacked and two others will face departmental actions as they were found guilty for custodial death of a businessman in an investigation,” SM Mafujul Haque Nuruzzaman, Deputy Inspector General of police of Dhaka Range, told BSS Thursday.

The cops who are going to lose job are: assistant sub- inspector of Savar police station Akidul Islam, police constables Ramjan Ali, Mofazzal Hossain and Yousuf Ali and Ashulia police station sub-inspector Emdadul Haque while sub-inspector Sazzad Romon and assistant town sub-inspector Shahidul Islam will face departmental action for negligence of duty.

All of them were arrested in a case filed by the victim’s brother Amin Sarkar. They are now in jail.

The government earlier formed an investigation team headed by Additional Deputy Inspector General Mizanur Rahman to probe the matter. The team submitted its report to DIG of Dhaka range on Tuesday.

Police headquarters has earlier issued an order asking all the police stations of Dhaka district to stop the activities of civil teams except for that of detective branch.
