Remittance from overseas migration has had a major impact on Bangladesh’s economy and society. Remittance contributed to nearly 13% of the Gross Domestic Product in 2012, and contributed to the Gross National Income as well.
The Brac Migration Programme has organised a consultation titled “Significance of Remittance: Poverty Alleviation and Livelihood Development in Bangladesh,” to be held today at the Brac Centre auditorium.
The keynote presentation will be given by Brac Executive Director Dr Mahabub Hossain. The event will be moderated Sheepa Hafiza, BRAC’s director of gender, justice and diversity.
The four members of the discussion panel are: Dasgupta Asim Kumar, executive director of Bangladesh Bank; Zafar Sobhan, editor of the Dhaka Tribune; Zahid Hossain, lead economist at the World Bank, Dhaka; and MP Anisul Islam Mahmud, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
