ACC is a ‘toothless tiger’: Ghulam Rahman

Update : 19 Jun 2013, 10:33 AM

Outgoing chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Ghulam Rahman Wednesday termed the commission as a “toothless tiger” for its weak legal weapons to fight during the trial process.

He said: “People could have understood the power of the commission, if the criminals could have been punished for committing corruption. The commission is now conducting huge activities with around 300 investigation officers, and several crores are being spent for the lawyers, but no such progress is seen in combating corruption.”

He made the observation while addressing a press conference in the commission headquarters at Segunbagicha.

He expressed his dissatisfaction saying: “A lot more uproar against corruption was seen during the tenure of the caretaker government. Many people were taken to custody, but what happened to them?”

“Courts have placed stay orders in many cases; dates of hearings are being extended which made the corruption watchdog a ‘toothless tiger’”, Ghulam said.
