Local people formed a human-chain in front of the Satkhira Press Club yesterday after which they blocked the Satkhira police station, demanding the immediate arrests of alleged drug peddles of the area.
The agitation programme was withdrawn after Officer-in-Charge of the police station Md Amanullah assured the locals of arresting the alleged drug peddlers.
Following the OC’s assurance, the agitated people also wrote a memorandum to the deputy commissioner in this regard.
Sources said the agitation programme took place as drug peddlers identified as Ashraful, Azizul, Sariful, Jalil, Monibib, Anjuara Begum – hacked and injured a person during a previous demonstration in which the locals were pushing their demands for stopping illegal drug peddling on June 13.
Police arrested and interrogated the alleged drug peddler, Anjuara Begum following the incident.
However, she was later released on bail from the court, after which she started giving death threats to the locals.
Locals, in this regard, made allegations that the law enforcers of the upazila were not taking any actions against the peddlers.
