Speakers at a discussion on Friday demanded compensation to the tune of Taka 45bn from multi-national companies Chevron and NIKO to utilize the amount of money for improvement of national resources and development activities.
They also called for passage of a bill in the Jatiya Sangsad by imposing a ban on export of the mineral resources with a view to ensuring use of oil-natural gas-coal resources for the greater national interest.
The National Committee for preservation of oil-gas-mineral resources and electricity-ports organised the discussion marking the Magurchchara Day at the city’s Mukti Bhaban at Purana Paltan with its member-secretary Prof Anu Muhammad in the chair, reports BSS.
Researcher Tanjim Uddin Khan, Engineer Kollol Mostafa and experts on mineral resources Noor Mohammad, Siddiqur Rahman, Ruhin Hossain Prince and Mosharraf Hossain Nannu were the discussants in it, according to a press release.
Speaking as the chairperson Prof Anu Muhammad said the multi- national company Chevron and NIKO should pay the country Taka 45bn as compensation only for damaging gas resources at Magurchara and Tengratila gas fields.
“The volume of natural gas damaged in the two fields would have been enough for generating electricity for two years in the country,” the National Committee leader said adding that construction of two Padma bridges could be made possible with the realisation of the amount of compensation money from the two foreign companies.
