A female student of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) was killed in a road accident on Wednesday evening, sparking violent protests in the city’s Agargaon and adjacent areas.
The angry protestors vandalised dozens of vehicles, suspending traffic movement of the area for an hour leaving enormous sufferings to the city dwellers.
Police suspended the traffic movement from Bijoy Sarani to Agargaon which resumed around 10:00pm.
Deceased Rina Akter, 26, was a PhD student of SAU, hailed from Rangpur district.
Biplob Kumar Sarker, deputy commissioner (Tejgaon Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told the Dhaka Tribune that an unidentified passenger bus hit Rina badly in front of the Election commission office at around 2:30pm. Later, Rina was rushed to Popular Hospital at Dhanmondi where she succumbed to her injuries at around 8:00pm on the day.
Soon after the news spread at SAU campus, the angry students of the university took the streets and vandalised a dozen of vehicles, he said.
Maruf Ahmed, inspector (investigation) of She-e-Bangla Nagar Police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that police rushed to the spot on information and pacify the angry students after assuring them stern action will be taken against the responsible driver.
A tense situation, however, prevailing on the area and additional law enforcers has deployed to fend off any other unwanted situation.
