Ahead of the maiden Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election, scheduled to be held on July 6, the election officials completed scrutiny of nomination papers on Monday.
Seven mayoral candidates were declared eligible for contesting the GCC poll.
The scrutiny of councillor candidates and candidates for the reserved seats were not completed till the filing of this report at 7.45pm.
Awami League-backed advocate Ajmat Ullah Khan, Prof MA Mannan, Brig (Retd) Kazi Mahmud Hasan from Jatiya Party (Ershad), Maulana Fazlur Rahman from Islami Oikko Forum, Mezba Uddin Rubel Sarker from Jatiyatabadi Prajanma Dal, Md Aman Ullah and Rina Sultana will vie for the post of mayor.
A total of 499 nomination papers were submitted for 57 posts of councillors and 130 nomination papers for 19 reserved seats for women councillors on the last day (June 6).
The candidacy of Jahangir Alam for the post of mayor was rejected as he failed to submit his resignation from the post of Gazipur Sadar Upazila Vice-chairman within the Election Commission (EC) deadline of 4pm on Monday.
The candidacy of Dr Nazim was also rejected as he was the guarantor of his son’s default bank loan, said Assistant Returning Officer Muhammad Hasanuzzaman.
Md Motiar Rahman, deputy secretary of the EC Secretariat, has been appointed as the returning officer for the country’s 11th city corporation polls.
As many as 1,026,964 voters -- 499,181 males and 527,783 females – will be able to exercise their right to elect their city father as well as 57 councillors and 19 reserved (women) councillors.
On January 16 this year, the local government division published a gazette announcing the Gazipur City Corporation comprising Gazipur and Tongi municipalities in line with the clause 34 (1) (A) of Local Government (City Corporation) Act-2009.
July 6 will be a public holiday in Gazipur so that voters can exercise their right to vote in the GCC polls.
