Angry locals block road following death of madrasa teacher

Update : 11 Jun 2013, 06:46 AM

Agitated local people blocked the Natore-Bogra highway in Jolarbata area in Singra upazila on Monday morning for one hour, protesting the death of a madrasa teacher in a road accident.

The deceased identified as Mohammad Ali Hasmat, 50, son of late Alhaz Chand Ali of village Shalmara of Italy union of the upazila, was an assistant superintendent of Sholakura Islami Alim Madrasha.

Local people, recounting the accident, said when Hasmat was going to his madrasa on his motorcycle, a Natore-bound speedy truck collided with his motorbike, leaving him dead on the spot. As news of his death spread, students of the institution rushed to the spot, pulled over logs and blockaded the road.

As a result, traffic came to a standstill and hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road.

The agitators withdrew the blockade after getting assurance from Upazila Nirbahi Officer Saifur Rahman Khan that a speed-breaker would be built on the spot soon, to avoid such accidents in the future. Police seized the truck involved in the accident but its driver and helper managed to flee.

Meanwhile, a man was killed and another injured as a ‘Nasimon’ (human hauler) overturned at Barali village in Kolaroa upazila on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 26, son of Habibur Rahman of Hawalkhali village of the upazila.

Police said the accident occurred when a ‘Nasimon’ carrying four cows from Hijaldi village to Kushkhali overturned in the area around 12pm, leaving its driver Saiful dead on the spot.
