A film retrospective featuring some timeless films by recently demised Indian filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh will begin at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Gulshan on Friday.
A total of four films will be screened throughout the programme: one film on every Friday at 6:30pm till July 4.
The opening film of the retrospective is “Unishe April” starring Aparna Sen, Debasree, Deepankar and Prosenjit Chatterjee. The rest of the films are “Utsab,” “Titli” and “Khela.” The films will be screened on the big screen in the DVD format.
IGCC in association with the State Bank of India in Bangladesh and Channel i as media partner is organising the retrospective paying tribute to the outstanding filmmaker whose untimely demise shocked the film lovers around the world.
Ghosh made films about women, sexuality and urban life that challenged conservative sensibilities in India. The winner of 12 national and some international awards, Ghosh was known throughout India and beyond, achieving both critical and commercial success and earning acclaim at film festivals in Asia, Europe and North America.
His most recently released film, “Chitrangada” (2012), dealt with same-sex relationships and gender identity and featured Ghosh in the role of a gay man who undergoes a sex-change operation so that he and his partner can adopt a child. Many saw the film as semiautobiographical. It won a special jury award at the 60th National Film Awards.
