Update : 07 Jun 2013, 08:36 AM

A Tk145.65bn allocation was proposed for the Ministry of Defence in Thursday’s budget speech, which is Tk15.8bn higher than last fiscal year.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith said the government is committed to building a strong and modern defence force, capable of meeting the challenges of the 21th century.

“We have formed a naval commando unit and added different equipment for capacity enhancement and modernisation of Bangladesh naval forces. In order to strengthen and enhance operational capacity of the air force, a new air base has been established and new aircrafts, helicopters and other sophisticated logistics have been procured,” Muhith said. Currently, Bangladesh tops the list of countries sending troops to UN peacekeeping missions.
