Over 50 people were injured in a clash between Awami League and BNP supporters over Narua union parishad by-election results at Baliakandi upazila in Rajbari Wednesday night.
Shaymol Chandra, sub-inspector of Baliakandi police station, said at least six business establishments were gutted and three motorbikes burnt in the clash.
Sydur Rahman Chunnu, a BNP leader and the defeated candidate for the chairman post in the by-election of June 1, 2013, said following an altercation over the election results loyalists of the two major candidates were locked in a clash that left at least 50-60 people injured.
He claimed that Awami League activists burnt their businesses and looted cash from the shops.
Rajkumer Shaha, officer in-charge of the Fire Service and Civil Defense of Rajbari, said the estimated loss was at least Tk17m.
Local Awami League leaders acknowledged the incident but denied the allegations against them.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Bipul Chandra Biswas, Additional Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman, Baliakandi Upazila Chairman Abul Kalam Azad, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer and local Awami League leaders visited the spot.
A case was lodged with the Baliakandi police station in this connection.
