Uzzal Chandra Shutradhar rose from the ashes to emerge as the fastest sprinter of the boy’s section, while Ayesha Siddika of BKSP grabbed the girl’s crown. The pair won their respective 100 meter sprints in the Walton National Junior Athletics at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
In the scorching 35 degree Celsius heat that had the athletes gasping for breath after the race, the pair held strong to finish ahead of the field.
Uzzal, the 17 year old from Kishoreganj, stunned his fellow BKSP competitors among others with a time of 11:12 seconds. Meanwhile, Ayesha, a class 10 student at BKSP, clocked a time of 12.60 seconds to finish ahead of compatriot Tanjila Khatum.
Uzzal, though having a 5 feet 4 inches stature, maintained the same tempo all out the run and outran Asif of BKSP in the last 50 meters with sheer speed. Asif finished second with a timing of 11.15 seconds. Not content with one first, Uzzal also finished first in the long jump event.
Uzzal a student of the Kotiadi Gochihata College aspires to flourish as a national athlete. “It is my first national level completion, as I have previously participated in the zonal school and college level meets. The success has boosted my confidence and I want to continue the success,” said the sprinter, who loves Usain Bolt.
Ayeshsa Siddika was also elated with her maiden national success. “I always dreamt of achieving success in the national level and my dream has come true at last, I will try my best to take the success to national level,” she declared.
