Update : 02 Jun 2013, 08:06 AM

Special allocations in the budget for agricultural and crops insurance could encourage agriculture, ensure a stable income and save farmers from natural calamities, a non-government research institution says.

At an event at the Dhaka Reporters Unity yesterday morning, INCIDIN Bangladesh called on the government to introduce agricultural and crops insurance in the upcoming budget.

“Agricultural and crops insurance will help a farmer financially to surmount the loss of natural calamity. It will also save a farmer from the fall of price of agricultural products,” AKM Masud Ali, executive director of INCIDIN, said in his speech. Speakers at the event praised the finance minister’s announcement of increasing agricultural sector allocation in the next budget.

Masud Ali urged the finance minister to hold talks with farmers before the budget, announcement of special allocation in the budget for agricultural and crops insurance, maximisation of the boundary of the insurance, effective steps to save the farmer from the loss of the fall of price of agricultural products, and implementation of a partnership system among state-owned insurance organisations, non-government insurance sector and NGOs.

Agricultural experts and economists attended the event.
