The Grameenphone National Special Olympics with the participation of about 500 physically and mentally challenged athletes commenced at the Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in Mirpur yesterday. After a gap of one year the biennial meet again saw the light, much to the cheers of the participants. The two-day meet is participated by 14 teams across seven disciplines - football, cricket, swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis and bouchi. After the completion of the games the selected athletes will attend a four-month training camp for the Special Olympics of Asia Pacific, scheduled to be held in Australia in December next. Grameenphone will sponsor the team and bear the overall expenditure of the traveling athletes. Special Olympics Bangladesh has earlier participated in two Special Olympics World Summer Games, held in China and Greece, winning a total of 129 medals since 2007.
