Faisal Mahmud, a staff reporter with Dhaka Tribune has won the Progga Tobacco Control Journalism Award 2013 in the best national English newspaper report category.
Mahmud won the award for his investigative report, titled 'Tobacco firms ignore law, run promotional campaigns', on tobacco companies' marketing strategy and promotional campaign.
In a simple ceremony on Wednesday at a city hotel, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu handed over the award as chief guest. A total of five awards were given in different categories.
Majedul Nayan, staff correspondent of Banglanews24.com won the best national Bangla newspaper report. Amin Al Rashid, senior reporter of ABC radio won the best radio report, Mohsinul Hakim, special correspondent of Channel 24 won the best electronic media report and Imam Mehedi of Dainik Arshinagar won the best local newspaper report.
A nine-member jury board headed by the vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique selected the winning reports among several entries.
Progga, a research and development organisation in collaboration with Anti-tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA), Bloomberg Philanthropies and Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) has been giving this award since 2011 on the wake of the World No Tobacco Day to be observed on May 31.
