No need to deploy army in four city polls: EC

Update : 29 May 2013, 07:21 AM

Expressing satisfaction over the law and order situation in the four city corporation areas, Election Commissioner Md Shah Newaz Tuesday said the EC did not receive any demands from any candidates in Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet and Barisal City Corporation polls to deploy military forces.

Elections in the four city corporations are scheduled to take place on June 15.

“There is no need to deploy the army in the upcoming four city corporation elections as existing law enforcement agencies are enough for maintaining the poll-time law and order situation,” the EC chief told reporters at the EC secretariat.

The EC in this connection will meet with different agencies including the home secretary to decide on the deployment of law enforcement agencies during the city corporation polls.

He said no one could play a political role in the four city corporation polls because they are meant to be non-partisan elections. The central leaders of political parties can not engage in any election campaigning or indoor meetings in the city corporation areas.

He said: “If anyone violates the electoral code of conduct, the returning officer will take action against them.”

Elections in the four city corporations were last held on August 4, 2008, under a state of emergency.

The main opposition BNP however did demand the army should be deployed during the last city corporation elections, under the AL government.
