Heavy rainfall disrupts people’s lives, 2 killed

Due to Kalbaishaki squall heavy to very heavy rainfall has occurred at places over Dhaka, Barisal and Chittagong divisions. Heavy showers hit different parts of the capital on Wednesday night.

Roads at different parts of the capital, including Mirpur-6, Mohammadpur, Motijheel, Gulshan-1 and Dhanmondi areas went under ankle to knee-deep water due to heavy downpour from Wednesday night, causing immense suffering to the city dwellers.

Commuters from low-lying areas were severely affected by water logging.

The rainwater damaged engines of many vehicles on the streets in Maghbazar, MalibagShewrapara of Mirpur creating an immense traffic gridlock, reports banglanews.

 

Two passersby were electrocuted by a snapped power cable in city’s Noyabazar under Bangshal thana Thursday morning.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Witnesses said the North-South road of the area was inundated due to heavy rainfall from Wednesday night.

They stepped on water where there was a live electric cable that cut loose due to heavy rains and were electrocuted and died on the spot.

Meanwhile, deep convection has taken place over North Bay and adjoining area of Bangladesh, says the met office bulletin.

Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

Earlieron Tuesday, a met bulletin said in association with rain showers temporary west/northwesterlyKalbaishakhi squalls speed 60-80 kph is likely to occur over the regions of Dhaka, Faridpur, Comilla, Barisal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chittagong and Cox`s Bazar wherein riverports shall hoist riverine warning signal no 2.

Rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind speed 45-60 kph is likely to occur elsewhere over the country wherein riverports shall hoist cautionary signal no 1, it added.
