The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission served show cause notices on Sunday to the country’s largest mobile phone operator Grameenphone for non-compliance of the directive “Interim Directives Traffic and Marketing Promotion”.
According to the directive, mobile operators are not allowed to offer any gifts except airtime, talk-time, SMSs and mobile handsets. No other goods of value are allowed to be offered as promotion prizes through lottery to their subscribers.
However, according to the notice, Grameenphone went for a partnership with a newspaper for a quiz competition. The BTRC directed Grameenphone to reply within seven days.
When contacted, Grameenphone authorities declined to comment on the issue.
